San Diego makes it easy to stay active: runs around Mission Bay, rides out toward Point Loma, beach sessions in Ocean Beach and Pacific Beach, a round of golf on the weekend. This category covers how strength training supports those activities and how to recover so small aches don't pile up.

Active Lifestyle & Recovery

What this category covers

Several guides are built around one activity. Personal Training for Runners in San Diego, Personal Training for Cyclists in San Diego, and Personal Training for Golfers in San Diego each look at the strength and mobility those sports ask for, and Beach Workouts vs the Gym compares sand sessions with loaded training.

Others focus on common trouble spots: shoulder health and posture, lower back pain, flexibility and mobility, and getting back to sport after time away in Personal Training for Athletic Comeback in San Diego.

How to use these guides

Read the guide for your main activity first, then add the mobility article, since range of motion affects nearly every sport covered here. If you sit at a desk downtown or in Mission Valley for much of the day, the shoulder and posture piece is a practical place to begin.

The back and shoulder articles describe general training approaches. They are not a diagnosis, and pain that is sharp, radiating, or getting worse should be checked by a doctor or physical therapist before you train through it.

When to bring it to a coach

A coach helps when you are coming back from a layoff, when one side keeps tightening up, or when you aren't sure whether to push or back off. Legacy San Diego is on Sports Arena Boulevard in Point Loma, a short drive from Ocean Beach, Mission Bay, and Pacific Beach. The roster includes coaches who list athletic recovery, injury prevention, and flexibility and mobility among their specialties, and the first consultation and introductory session are free.

Can I build strength with beach workouts alone?

Beach workouts can build conditioning and some strength, but the load you can add tends to be limited. The beach-versus-gym guide explains where each fits.

Should I see a coach or a physical therapist for back pain?

If pain is new, severe, or follows an injury, start with a doctor or physical therapist. A coach can then work within that guidance to build strength.

When is Legacy San Diego open?
