Why surfers train on land

What the ocean does not build for you

Surfing is a strange sport for the body. Hours go into paddling, which is repetitive pulling with the chest down and the neck extended, and only a few minutes in a session go to the explosive pop-up and the turn. The result is a common pattern: strong, tired lats and rounded shoulders, a stiff upper back, tight hip flexors and a lower back that carries more than its share.

A good land program does not try to replace surfing. It fills in the gaps. That usually means pulling and pressing in balance, rotational strength through the trunk, single-leg stability for the stance you hold on a board, and enough mobility in the hips and thoracic spine to get low and turn without cranking the lumbar region.

Legacy coaches come from many disciplines, and the roster is searchable by specialty. A surfer is rarely served by one narrow style, so it is worth meeting a coach who works in strength, one who knows mobility, and perhaps one who comes from a combat or movement background, then deciding who explains the work best.

Shoulders first

Protecting the paddling shoulder

Of all the joints a surfer relies on, the shoulder takes the most repetition. Training that sits well with paddling usually leans on rows, face pulls, band work for the rotator cuff and the muscles around the shoulder blade, and pressing that keeps the blade moving freely instead of pinning it.

The point is balance, not volume. If you already spend two hours a morning pulling water, the gym does not need to add more pulling. It needs to add controlled overhead and pushing work, thoracic extension and rotation, and light, precise cuff exercises done well. A coach can watch how the shoulder moves under load and adjust.

Pain that persists in a shoulder or elbow is a reason to see a clinician before loading it. Coaches can work around an issue you have already had assessed, and they will ask you what your doctor or therapist has said.

  • Rows and pull-aparts to match the pulling you already do in the water
  • Overhead and pressing patterns that keep the shoulder blade moving
  • Thoracic spine mobility so you can lift your chest on the board
  • Light cuff and scapular work done with strict form
Power and balance

Pop-up speed, stance and single-leg strength

Getting to your feet quickly and landing low is a power skill, and it responds to the same basics as any other power skill: strong legs, a stiff trunk and practice at moving fast with good form. Push-up variations, jump work scaled to your joints and loaded carries all feed into it.

Stance is a single-leg and rotation problem. Split squats, step-ups, lateral lunges and anti-rotation presses build the control to stay stacked over a moving board. The goal is not a bigger number on a bar. It is waking up the muscles that keep your knees tracking and your hips level when the wave does something you did not expect.

Pull and press balance

Offsets the repetitive paddling posture.

Hips and trunk

Rotation and stability for turns and for the drop.

Lungs and legs

General conditioning so flat days still count.

Beyond the board

Paddleboarding, running, cycling and the coast road

Encinitas is not only for surfers. The beaches host paddleboarders and swimmers, the bike lane along the coast is busy with cyclists and the trails near San Elijo Lagoon draw runners. Each of these is endurance-leaning, and each tends to leave the upper body, the glutes or the trunk underdeveloped.

Strength work two days a week helps most of them. For runners and cyclists the evidence points toward heavy-ish resistance training improving economy and reducing overuse issues. For paddlers it protects the shoulders. For swimmers it works on the pull-to-push imbalance in the other direction.

Around the swell

Training that bends around the tide and the swell

Surfers plan their day around conditions, not a calendar. A booked 8 a.m. slot is hard to keep when the forecast turns epic, and a rigid weekly schedule is often what gets dropped first.

The facility is open 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM, seven days a week, so a session can sit before dawn patrol, after a long afternoon session or on the flat days between swells. VIP Access Pass members get a personal key fob and 24/7 access, which suits anyone who trains at unconventional hours.

Because there is no membership, you pay coaches for the sessions you book instead of carrying a contract through winter swells and summer flat spells. Each coach sets their own rates, so ask when you meet them.

Will lifting weights make me worse at surfing?

Not when it is programmed sensibly. The usual concern is bulk or stiffness. Training that includes mobility, pulling and rotational work tends to support surfing rather than hurt it. Tell your coach how many sessions a week you surf so they can plan around that load.

How many days a week should a surfer train in the gym?

For most people two sessions a week alongside regular surfing is a workable starting point. A third lighter session can help in flat spells. The right number depends on how often you are in the water, how you recover and what else is going on in your week.

I have a sore shoulder from paddling. Can a trainer help?

A coach can build strength and mobility around a shoulder that has already been checked, and can avoid positions that aggravate it. If the pain is sharp, persistent or has not been looked at, see a physician or physical therapist first, then bring their guidance to your coach.

Do I need to be an advanced surfer?

No. Beginners often benefit most, because shoulder endurance and trunk stability make the early sessions less frustrating. Coaches work with first-timers, weekend surfers and people who surf daily.

Can I train for something other than surfing, such as paddleboarding or running?

Yes. Legacy coaches cover strength, mobility, conditioning, boxing, yoga and Pilates and more. Browse the roster by discipline, and tell the coach what sport you want to support.
