Before you begin

Talk to your physician first

Strength and balance training is one of the most helpful things many older adults can do for their health, but the right program depends on your medical history. Heart conditions, high blood pressure, diabetes, osteoporosis, joint replacements, recent surgery, dizziness and some medications all affect what is appropriate.

Before your first session, ask your physician whether you are cleared for exercise, and whether there are movements, heart-rate limits or positions to avoid. Bring that guidance to the introduction. Your coach builds the program around it and will adjust if your physician changes your restrictions. If you feel chest pain, severe breathlessness, dizziness or unusual pain during any session, stop and seek medical care.

What matters most

The four things a good senior program trains

Aging changes how quickly muscle and bone adapt, but it does not remove the ability to improve. Well-designed programs focus on a handful of qualities that make everyday life easier and safer.

Your coach weights these according to your goals, and most plans touch all four every week.

Strength

Resistance training to maintain and build muscle that supports walking, stairs and getting up from a chair.

Balance

Single-leg work, controlled weight shifts and reaction drills that reduce the risk of falls.

Mobility

Joint-friendly range of motion in hips, shoulders and spine to keep movement comfortable.

Stamina

Walking-based and low-impact conditioning to support heart health and daily energy.

Why one-on-one

Why individual coaching suits older adults

Group classes are valuable for many people, but they cannot adjust for one participant's hip replacement or shoulder limitation in real time. In a one-on-one session your coach watches your movement, controls the pace, chooses the exercises and changes them the moment something feels wrong.

Legacy is a private training facility, not a public gym. Sessions are one-on-one or small-group, with no crowded floor and no waiting for equipment, so there is no pressure to rush between exercises. Every coach on the roster is certified and vetted before joining, and a number list senior fitness among their specialties. Use the roster filter on this page to see them.

Goals

Training for the life you want to keep

Most older adults do not come in wanting a particular body. They want to keep doing specific things: walking the trails, playing golf, traveling without worrying about luggage, getting down to the floor with grandchildren and back up again. Good coaching starts from those targets and works backward.

Typical goals include:

  • Getting up from a chair or the floor more easily
  • Walking longer and climbing stairs without fatigue
  • Improving balance and confidence on uneven ground
  • Maintaining muscle and bone health as you age
  • Returning to activity after surgery or rehab, once your physician and therapist clear you
  • Staying consistent with a routine that someone holds you to

Getting started

What happens at your first session

Your first consultation and introductory session with a Legacy coach is free, with no obligation. You talk through your health history, your physician's guidance, what you want to be able to do, and any pain or limitations. Your coach then runs a gentle assessment of movement and strength, and explains how they would structure the first weeks.

No membership is required to train with a coach, and coaching is booked directly with the coach you choose. Coaches are independent professionals who set their own rates, typically per session or as a package, and quote you after the introduction. If you would like a spouse, friend or family member to come with you to the first visit, that is fine, and bringing your list of medications and any notes from your physician or physical therapist helps your coach plan well.

Related pages
Do I need a doctor's approval before training?

Yes, please get clearance from your physician before starting, especially if you have heart, blood pressure, bone, joint or balance concerns, or take medications that affect exercise. Share their guidance with your coach at your introductory session.

I have not exercised in years. Is it too late to start?

Generally no. Many older adults gain strength and balance with consistent, progressive training, even if they are starting from very little. With physician clearance, your coach begins at a level that suits you and builds gradually.

Will I be lifting heavy weights?

Possibly, but only as it becomes appropriate. Resistance training is central to senior fitness, and loads are progressed slowly with attention to technique. Many exercises start with body weight or light resistance.

Can training help prevent falls?

Strength, balance and reaction training are commonly recommended to reduce fall risk. No program can promise you will never fall, but a coach can help you improve the qualities that matter, and adjust the plan to your physician's advice.

What if I have arthritis or a joint replacement?

Tell your coach and follow your physician's or physical therapist's guidance. Exercises are chosen to respect the joint, and many people find movement and strength work helpful for stiffness. Do not train through sharp or worsening pain.

How often should I train?

Many older adults do well with two or three coached sessions per week, combined with walking. Your coach suggests a frequency based on your health, goals and recovery.

Do I have to be a member to train?

No. No membership is required to train with a coach. Coaching is booked directly with the coach you choose, and coaches set their own rates.
