Del Mar Strength Training for Golfers: A Rotational Power Program to Add Distance and Prevent Back Pain
A client came in last spring after four holes at Torrey Pines left him unable to tie his shoes the next morning.
Strength and conditioning (S&C) is structured training that builds force, power, work capacity and resilience, whether you play a sport, ride horses, golf, race or just want a stronger body. Legacy Del Mar serves Rancho Santa Fe at 12264 El Camino Real, Suite 60, San Diego, CA 92130. Your first consultation and introductory session are free, with no obligation.
S&C is a planned approach to getting stronger, faster, more powerful and harder to injure. It combines resistance training, explosive or speed work, conditioning for the heart and lungs, and mobility work, arranged across weeks and months instead of improvised each day.
The difference from general fitness is intent. Every session has a purpose that connects to a larger plan, and the plan changes as your sport season, schedule or goals change.
A coach works on several physical qualities and balances them against how much recovery you can handle.
Training works through progressive overload: you do a little more, or the same work a little better, over time, then back off briefly so the body can absorb it. Coaches often organize this into blocks, with an emphasis on volume, then strength, then power or sport-specific work.
Tracking matters. Lifts, times and how you feel are logged so changes in the program rely on data. If something stalls, the plan is adjusted instead of simply pushed harder.
Recovery is part of the program, not an afterthought. Sleep, protein, and planned lighter days let the work you do in the gym turn into actual adaptation. Your coach will ask about all three and adjust training load when life gets heavy, so progress continues without tipping into burnout or injury.
S&C is not only for professionals. It suits youth and adult athletes who want to improve at a sport, people preparing for a race or event, golfers and tennis players who want more power and fewer injuries, and adults who simply like structured training with measurable progress.
Legacy has coaches who list strength and conditioning, athletic performance, sports performance training and speed and agility. Roster profiles show who focuses on what.
Rancho Santa Fe is an inland North County community with a strong equestrian, golf and tennis culture and plenty of open space and trails. Riders need a strong core and stable hips. Golfers need rotational power and mobility. Tennis players need lateral speed and shoulder health. S&C addresses each of those.
Legacy Del Mar serves Rancho Santa Fe and is open 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily, so you can fit sessions around practice, work or travel. See the personal training page for Rancho Santa Fe for a neighborhood overview.
Strength training carries risk when technique is poor, so coaches teach movements with lighter loads before loading them, and spot or adjust as needed. If you have an injury, a heart or blood pressure condition, or are returning from surgery, get your physician's clearance first and tell your coach what they advised. Coaches adapt exercises but do not diagnose or treat injuries.
If you compete or play seasonally, a coach can organize the year into phases: an off-season focused on building strength and fixing weak links, a pre-season that converts strength into power and speed, and an in-season plan that maintains qualities without adding fatigue before games or races.
If you do not compete, the same logic applies to your calendar. A trip, a big work period or a family event is a reason to adjust the plan, not abandon it. Reduced-volume weeks keep the habit alive and let you pick up again without starting over.
Testing helps too. Simple benchmarks such as a heavy set of squats, a jump height, a timed row or a repeat sprint effort give you objective feedback every few weeks and keep the program honest.
No membership is required. Coaches are independent professionals who set their own rates, typically per session or as a package, quoted after your free introduction. Browse the Legacy coach roster, message a few coaches, and try a free session with the one whose approach fits.

Strength training focuses on building force with resistance exercise. Strength and conditioning adds power, speed, energy-system conditioning and mobility into a planned program, usually with a performance goal such as sport, an event or general athleticism.
No. S&C coaches work with competitive athletes and with active adults who want structured, measurable training. Programs scale to your level.
It can build rotational power, mobility, balance and shoulder and hip strength that support those sports. Results depend on technique, consistency and how well training matches your sport, and your sport coach still handles skill.
It depends on your goals and recovery. Many people train two to four days a week. Your coach sets a frequency that fits your schedule, other activity and sleep.
When technique is coached and loads progress gradually, resistance training is widely considered safe for most healthy adults. Check with your physician if you have health concerns, and tell your coach about any injuries.
