Definition

What strength and conditioning means

S&C comes from sport, where coaches plan training in phases so athletes peak when it counts. The same logic works for anyone. You train strength qualities in a deliberate order, track the numbers, and change the plan when progress slows. That is different from showing up and doing whatever feels hard that day.

Legacy lists Strength and Conditioning, Athletic Performance and Sports Performance Training among its coaching tags on the San Diego roster, so you can find coaches who work this way. As with every Legacy coach, each is an independent professional, and the introduction is your chance to see whether their approach suits you.

If you have never followed a structured plan, expect the first block to feel almost easy. That is intentional. It builds technique and a base of work capacity, and it leaves room to add load without grinding.

  • Planned blocks that focus on one quality at a time, such as base strength or power
  • Progressive overload tracked from session to session
  • Conditioning matched to your goal, from work capacity to sport-specific fitness
  • Warm-ups and mobility that prepare you for the lifts
  • Retests so you can see improvement in real numbers

Why periodization beats random workouts

Randomness feels productive because every session is hard. But if the stimulus never builds in an organised way, progress stalls and joints get tired. Periodization means varying volume, intensity and exercise selection over weeks so you can keep improving without grinding yourself down.

A coach might spend several weeks building a base of moderate-load work, then move toward heavier lifting, then include lighter weeks so you can absorb the work. The exact blocks depend on you, your experience and your life outside the gym.

Tracking matters as much as the plan. Writing down loads, repetitions and how a session felt gives your coach the information to make the next block smarter, and gives you evidence that the work is working.

Mission Valley

Training in a central neighborhood

Mission Valley sits along the San Diego River and Interstate 8, between Old Town, Hillcrest and the college area. It is a hub for offices, hotels and shopping, and many people there fit exercise between work and home. A planned S&C program fits that kind of schedule because every session has a purpose and nothing is wasted.

Legacy San Diego is the nearest Legacy facility for Mission Valley, located at 4030B Sports Arena Blvd in the Sports Arena district of Point Loma. Hours are Monday to Friday 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM and Saturday and Sunday 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and VIP Access Pass members get 24/7 access with a personal key fob.

Efficiency

How many days a week do you really need

Most people make solid progress on two to four well-planned sessions a week. More is not automatically better. What matters is that each session targets something specific, that you recover between them, and that you can keep it up for months.

Your coach will ask about work, sleep, stress and other activity before setting a frequency. A busy week might call for a shorter session built around a single main lift, while a lighter week allows more volume.

If you only have three sessions a week, a common split is a heavier lower-body day, an upper-body day and a mixed day that includes conditioning. If you only have two, full-body sessions covering the main patterns do the job.

Who it suits

Athletes, weekend competitors and everyone else

S&C is useful for competitive athletes, but it is equally good for recreational runners, cyclists, golfers, hikers and people who simply want to be strong. If you play a weekend sport, a coach can build in the movements that support it and the strength that helps you avoid common overuse injuries.

If you are returning from an injury, get clearance from a physician or physical therapist and tell your coach what they said. S&C coaches are used to working within limits and building back up gradually.

Weekend competitors in particular benefit from an off-season approach: build strength and fix weak links while you are not playing every week, then taper the load as competition returns.

Conditioning

Conditioning is more than cardio

Conditioning covers how well you sustain and repeat effort. That might mean steady aerobic work for endurance, intervals for recovery between hard efforts, or short repeated sprints for power. Legacy coaches tagged with cardiovascular endurance or athletic performance can guide the choice.

A good plan keeps conditioning from undermining your strength work. Hard intervals the day before a heavy squat session is a classic mistake, and sequencing is part of what a coach handles for you.

Cost and booking

Membership, rates and starting out

No membership is needed. Coaching is booked directly with the coach you choose, and coaches set their own rates, typically per session or as a package. Your first consultation and introductory session are free, and the coach quotes you afterwards.
