Sports Performance Training coaches in San Diego.

Sports performance training develops the general athletic qualities that most sports rely on: strength, power, speed, conditioning and durability, organized around the athlete's season. Coaches at Legacy San Diego in Point Loma who list it work with high school athletes, college players home for the summer, and adults who compete seriously in their sport.

Sports Performance Training

Built around the calendar

The defining feature of sports performance work is that the plan changes with the season. The off-season is the time to build strength and power with heavier, more demanding training. Pre-season shifts toward speed and sport-like conditioning. In-season, training usually drops to shorter, maintenance-style sessions so the athlete stays strong without arriving at games tired.

A coach will want your competition schedule, practice load and any other training you do before writing the program, so the weight room supports the sport rather than competing with it.

Sports Performance Training

What a typical session involves

Sessions often begin with a dynamic warm-up and jumping or throwing to train power, then move to main strength lifts such as squats, hinges, presses and pulls, followed by single-leg and trunk work. Conditioning is matched to the sport's demands: repeated short sprints for a field player, longer intervals for an endurance athlete.

Expect regular testing so the coach can see whether the training is working and adjust it. Common measures include jump height, short sprint times, strength on the main lifts, and a conditioning test suited to the sport. Just as important is the athlete's own report of how they feel in games: fresher late in the fourth quarter, harder to push off the ball, quicker back on defense.

Sports Performance Training

Teen athletes and the age policy

Legacy San Diego trains athletes aged 13 to 18 in one-on-one sessions only, which suits younger athletes who need close supervision while they learn to lift. It helps if a parent comes to the introduction too. If an athlete has any medical condition or recent injury, get clearance from their physician before training starts.

For a teenager, the early focus is usually technique, body control and gradual loading rather than maximal lifts.

Sports Performance Training

How it differs from sport-specific training

Sports performance training builds the engine any athlete needs. Sport-specific training narrows the focus to the movements, positions and demands of one sport. Most athletes benefit from both, with the balance shifting over the year.

How It Is Coached

Functional & Endurance at Legacy.

Functional and endurance training builds the capacity to move well and keep moving: carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing and holding a pace. It develops strength through full-body patterns and builds the aerobic base that makes both daily life and sport feel easier.

01

Movement patterns, not isolated muscles

Sessions are built from squats, hinges, pushes, pulls, carries and rotation, trained in ways that transfer to real life and sport.

02

A deliberate aerobic base

Easy, steady work and harder intervals are programmed on purpose, so conditioning improves without running you into the ground.

03

Progression you can measure

Pace, distance, heart-rate response, loads and rep quality are tracked, so improvement is visible and the next step is clear.

04

Variety with a plan

Equipment and formats change, but the weekly structure stays consistent so each session builds on the last.

Guides from the San Diego coaches.

Will lifting make a young athlete slower or less flexible?

Well-coached strength training is widely considered appropriate for teenagers, and it does not inherently reduce speed or flexibility. Technique and sensible progression are what matter.

Can we train during the season?

Yes. In-season sessions are usually shorter and lighter, scheduled away from game days. Legacy San Diego is open 6 AM to 9 PM on weekdays and 8 AM to 6 PM on weekends, which leaves room around most practice schedules.

What should an athlete bring to the first session?

Their season schedule, any injury history, and the goals they and their sport coach have discussed. The introduction is free and carries no obligation.

How much does it cost?

Coaching is priced by each coach, typically per session or as a package, and quoted after your free introduction. No membership is required to train with a coach. Coaching is booked directly with the coach you choose.

Do I need experience to start?

No. Your coach starts with an assessment and builds the program to your level. Your first consultation and introductory session with a Legacy coach is free, with no obligation.

Do I need to be an athlete to train functional and endurance work?

No. The same principles scale from first-time exercisers to competitive endurance athletes. Your coach sets the starting volume and intensity from your assessment, not from a fixed template.
