Intra-Workout Nutrition Strategies for Endurance
A client of ours — a surgeon who trains for the Solana Beach Triathlon every June — came into a Saturday session in June describing what happened on a 2-hour bluff-trail run near Torrey…
Athletic performance training develops the physical qualities that show up in sport: acceleration, top speed, jumping, change of direction, strength and the durability to repeat them. In Del Mar it draws everyone from teenage field athletes to adults who want to stay sharp on the tennis court, the volleyball sand or a surfboard.

Where general fitness asks whether you are healthier, athletic performance asks whether you are faster, more powerful and harder to injure in your sport. The training borrows from strength work but adds explosive and reactive elements: sprints, bounds, landings, throws and cutting drills.
It is not the same as practicing your sport. Skill work belongs with your sport coach. This is the physical layer underneath, so that skill can be expressed at full speed late in a match.
A typical session opens with a thorough warm-up that doubles as movement practice, then moves to the fastest, most demanding work while you are fresh: short sprints, jumps or medicine ball throws. Strength work follows, often a lower-body lift, an upper-body push or pull, and single-leg work. Some sessions finish with conditioning that matches the work-to-rest pattern of your sport.
Volume is managed carefully. In-season athletes who already train most afternoons often need less, not more, and a good coach plans around practice and game days.
It suits athletes of most ages who already play a sport and want a physical edge, plus active adults whose recreation is fast and unpredictable, like pickleball, beach volleyball or surfing at Del Mar's beach breaks.
If you are new to exercise, recovering from an injury, or have not lifted before, a foundation phase of general strength comes first. Anyone with an injury, heart condition or other medical concern should get physician clearance before high-intensity jumping and sprinting.
Performance training lends itself to numbers: sprint times over short distances, vertical or broad jump, strength on a main lift, and how well an athlete repeats efforts. Most coaches test at the start and every several weeks.
Just as important, though harder to chart, is how you feel in your sport: getting to balls you used to miss, holding form late in a game, fewer nagging aches through a season.
Functional and endurance training builds the capacity to move well and keep moving: carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing and holding a pace. It develops strength through full-body patterns and builds the aerobic base that makes both daily life and sport feel easier.
Sessions are built from squats, hinges, pushes, pulls, carries and rotation, trained in ways that transfer to real life and sport.
Easy, steady work and harder intervals are programmed on purpose, so conditioning improves without running you into the ground.
Pace, distance, heart-rate response, loads and rep quality are tracked, so improvement is visible and the next step is clear.
Equipment and formats change, but the weekly structure stays consistent so each session builds on the last.

A client — a surgical device sales director who trains with us at 6 a.m. before back-to-back calls — hit a wall in July. Her squat had been climbing steadily for ten weeks, then flattened.
A client walks in after a nine-hour day of back-to-back meetings, phone still buzzing in her bag, and tells us she can’t focus enough to train.
Ask what athletes and sports they work with, how they adjust training in season, and what they test. Look for a coach who asks about your practice and game schedule before writing anything.
Yes, when it is age appropriate and technique comes first. Ask the coach how they progress a young athlete, and involve your family physician if there are any health questions.
Often one to three, depending on season, sport practice volume and recovery. More is not always better when practices and games already fill the week.
Athletic performance programming emphasizes speed and power relative to body weight. Large muscle gains usually require dedicated hypertrophy training and eating to match.
